90 And Loving It

The air crackled outside my second floor bedroom window.  I looked out to see my nearly 90 year old neighbour on the back of a Harley buzzing up and down the street.  What could I do but grab my camera and run at break-neck speed down my staircase and out onto the street?

Meet Julie Baker.  Yup, she’ll be 90 this month – May 22, actually.  She’s lived in my neighbourhood since it was first established – over 60 years ago.  She lives in a cute red trimmed, white house with an immaculate garden. Often I’ll see her out there on her hands and knees picking the clover out of her lawn. When the weather is nice, she takes her walker for a spin around the block. She’s told me it takes her an hour.

On the bike with her is her eldest son, Roger. He  has a surprise for Julie.  This wasn’t just an outing for fun only, but part of his, and his wife Tess’, elaborate plan to feature her in the local paper for her big day.  I asked if I could post this before the paper came out and was given the go-ahead.  Julie doesn’t own a computer. If you happen to run into her somewhere, mums the word.

UPDATE:  We threw a block party for her birthday!  See photos here.

Happy Birthday Julie!!!  Enjoy the ride.
