Early Spring in Montreal – Urban Sketches

A few weeks back we had a gaggle of tree fellers come to our neighbors and take this tree (shown above) down piece by piece. It took them two days. It was a very large and beautiful specimen, but it was growing in an awkward spot, nearly under our neighbor’s house. Apparently it had been slated for removal for years. I sat up on my neighbor’s balcony and sketched the action.

I spend some time every week in Mile End, specifically along Parc Ave, generally when I have some time to kill. The sketch above and directly below were done from the vantage point of the same corner of a coffee shop at the intersection of Parc and Laurier, on different days.

Sometimes it’s nice to get a little sliver of a scene. I like using my little Moleskine watercolour book for that.

This study is of a school on Durocher in Outremont.  I love the high arches and all of the layers of the building that seem to come reaching out toward you on the street.
